Eucharist (Holy Communion)

The Eucharist is one of the central mysteries of the Catholic faith. We believe that an ordained priest by the words of consecration, during Mass, makes Christ present in a special way.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem wrote “Do not see in the bread and wine merely natural elements, because the Lord has expressly said that they are his body and blood; faith assures you of this, though your senses suggest otherwise.”

The Eucharist is the best way for Catholics to bond with Christ and with one another. Because Protestants have a different understanding of what communion is and because we differ in other ways, intercommunion is invalid.

In a Catholic church extra consecrated hosts are kept in a tabernacle. This allows for private worship by the faithful. And it also allows Communion to be brought to the sick. Catholics are encouraged to bow or genuflect towards the tabernacle before entering a pew.

There are many books and articles written about the Eucharist. Call you local Catholic book store for recommendations.
